Property Investment, development and management

Having always been passionate about the protection of vulnerable children, Martin Birrane, founder and Executive Chairman of Peer Group plc, established a charitable foundation in his name, The Birrane Foundation. The priority of the Foundation, which was set up in 2016, is to make a difference to the plight of poor, starving and disadvantaged children and young people around the world. His vision was realised by utilising 20% of Peer Group’s annual dividend which provides funding to The Birrane Foundation.

Although Martin Birrane passed away in June 2018, his family continue to be the custodians of The Birrane Foundation.

The Birrane Foundation has made numerous donations to children’s charities since its inception. A small selection of those charities benefitting from donations over the past five years include UNICEF, NSPCC and ISPCC as well as those in many deprived countries around the world such as Syria, Yemen and Bangladesh. Another focus of the Foundation is to help smaller charities with fewer cash resources such as St Wilfred’s Hospice based in Sussex caring for the terminally ill, as well as Headway who provide support services to brain injury survivors and their families. Also benefitting from donations are Combat Stress providing mental health services for veterans, Crisis who aim to end homelessness and give people a new start and Anti Slavery, campaigners against slavery in modern day Britain, among many others.

Martin always maintained an interest in his alma mater college, St Muredach’s in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland and set up three bursaries a year to help those students studying engineering and technology. These bursaries have been hugely successful in encouraging students to stay in education and study these important subjects.

The London Borough of Southwark has been home to Martin’s business interests since the early 1970’s and Peer Group is headquartered here at The Hop Exchange. Support has been given to local charities including BOST (Bankside Open Spaces Trust). For the last 20 years, BOST has been protecting, preserving and enhancing parks, gardens and other amenities in Southwark. The Birrane Foundation provides annual funding to enable local young people to learn about horticulture and to gain valuable qualifications to assist them to secure future employment.

Peer Group is proud to be associated with The Birrane Foundation which continues to make an enormous difference to children and young people’s lives, making it a fitting tribute to its founder, Martin Birrane and making sure his legacy and generosity continues into the future.
